WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY!
Dear Olympus Families,
It is with great pleasure that I say hello and welcome to our 2016-17 Summit Olympus school
community! I am so delighted that you and your student have made the choice to join us for the upcoming school year. I have greatly enjoyed getting to know many of you over the course of the year and application process, and I look forward to getting to know more of you as we support our kids in reaching their goals this coming year at Olympus.
It’s going to be a great year! We are enrolling a wonderful, diverse group of students who will bring their dreams, spirit, ideas, creativity, and initiative to Summit Olympus each day. We will continue to work so that every single student feels known, valued, challenged, and inspired by the teachers and classes as well as by each other. We have hired a wonderful faculty including many Tacoma natives as well as experienced and passionate teachers from around the country who are thrilled to join our school’s mission and dedicate themselves to our students.
2016-17 is the second year of our school, which gives us the chance to build on our successes and grow closer and stronger as a community. I invite all of you to join me in making this happen. One great thing about a growing school is that anyone can play a role in creating and shaping it – and we value your thoughts, wisdom, and experience if you’d like to help us! From our annual camping trip to our family pot lucks, from our mentor group and community time activities to our Expeditions and Career Day exhibitions, from supporting your student with homework on a daily basis to volunteering to work with staff and students here at Olympus, there are so many ways you can be involved with your student and our school. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have interest in getting involved and/or have questions, concerns, or ideas for how we can make Summit Olympus a better place for all students and families.
One important thing I encourage you to do now: Support your students in keeping up their skills over the summer. “Summer slide” can make it harder for students to be on track with academics in the fall. Encourage your kids to read books this summer. Go to the library together. Encourage them to read the newspaper and talk with them about what’s going on in Tacoma and the world. Visit great web sites like khanacademy.org, codecademy.com, and newsela.com. If you’d like more ideas of ways to keep your students’ brains engaged this summer, please feel free to contact me anytime.
I cannot wait to see you all in the fall and begin our year together. Until then, have a wonderful summer!
